How does Hoodia Work?

Hoodia Gordonii is a non-stimulant appetite suppressant which has no known adverse side-effects or interactions. As a traditional food of the San people, Hoodia has a long history of helping to control hunger and thirst in the harsh desert environment. Only recently has science begun to unravel the effects of Hoodia has on the human body.

Hoodia does not help your body to burn fat or calories, but instead acts directly on the brain to curb appetite. This is good, since FDA findings have shown a history of serious side-effects, even fatal ones, from stimulant weight-loss supplements such as ephedra. Stimulants like ephedra have a powerful effect on the nervous system and tend to raise both heart rate and body temperature. This is because Hoodia Gordonii actually fools the brain into not being hungry. It is believed to do this by mimicking the effect of glucose on the brain. Instead of feeling anxious about being hungry, one feels little or no strong desire to eat. Researchers have isolated a molecule called P-57, which some believe to be the molecule in Hoodia which curbs hunger. However, others argue that there are actually several molecules involved. Either way, molecules called sterol glycosides, including the P-57 molecule, are those considered to be responsible for Hoodia’s effect on the brain.

Repeated attempts to create synthetic sterol glycoside drugs have failed to duplicate Hoodia’s appetite suppressing effect. As such, the only source for these active molecules is the Hoodia Gordonii plant itself. Although high-quality powders and extracts offer excellent results, it is important to make sure that your Hoodia source is reliable.
